RIP Sir David Amess

There are times when politics just HAS to go out of the window and it suddenly seems a very silly, unimportant thing. This is just such a time.

Sir David Amess was stabbed to death today.

Sir David was a Conservative, I am not. So what! He probably liked different ties to me and didn't love Yorkshire pudding, which I do.

What IS important is that the 69-year-old father-of-five was, by all accounts, a lovely man. The words "gentlest", "kindest" and "nicest" have been used about him. He was also a passionate campaigner on issues such as endometriosis (an awful condition which afflicted someone very close to me) and fuel poverty - what's not to like? He was also an ardent campaigner against animal cruelty, notably fox hunting and puppy farming. For those things alone he would always have been welcome at my house.

He was stabbed to death while hosting a surgery - meeting and helping people - in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in his Southend West constituency.

God, there are a lot of toe-rags in Parliament, notably on the front benches, but backbencher Sir David was NOT one of them. He was a glowing example of what an MP, and a man, should be like.

A 25-year-old man of Somali origin was arrested at the scene in connection with the murder. The Contempt of Court Act 1981 prevents me commenting further.

God bless Sir David. My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with his family and loved ones.

P.S. In line with the tradition of this blog I am forwarding this tribute to Sir David's constituency office.

Reg.

FELIX MORRIS FROM SIR DAVID'S OFFICE REPLIED THUS:

Dear Reg,

Thank you very much for your kind e-mail. Sir David certainly did put his constituents and Southend above all else and wanted to help those who needed it most. Messages of support and condolences are being collated and sent to the family in due course.

Best wishes,

Felix.
