So, a committee investigating the riotous attempted insurrection at the Capitol in the USA says it will "persue criminal proceedings" against former Trump advisor Steve Bannon after he failed to answer a subpoena and appear before them
We are told the no-show was a direct result of orders from former President Pants On Fire and that the said House select committee would "refer" Bannon for criminal contempt.
This move needs supporting but I had just one or two queries I needed to raise with US Attorney General Merrick Garland:
Dear Mr Garland,
While I welcome moves by your country to bring Steve Bannon to book I fear hopes we can "lock him up, lock him up!" might be a tad premature.
You see, I supposed that once he defied an order of the House an armed Swat team would be round his drum and dragging him out before you could say "Stop the steal!"
He would then, I imagined, appear in court in chains, be found guilty after a wholly Democratic (corr) trial, and sentenced to be torn apart by wolves - or at least jailed.
It seems I may have set the bar a tad high, however. It turns out:
🤔 A panel will now meet on Tuesday to recommend the charges.
😣 That will then go before the House for a full vote.
😭 If the House backs holding Bannon in contempt the matter will then be up to the Justice Department whether or not to prosecute!
Given all the doubtless concomitant appeals, Bannon will not have to decide which tie to wear in court until temperatures drop below zero in Hades - if ever!
As for his former cult master, Mr 🐷 should now be arranging for all his mail to be redirected to San Quinton as he faces allegations of, among other things:
1. Rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment involving 26 women.
2. Campaign finance violations for paying pornstar Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep schtum about an affair they allegedly had.
3. Fraud involving four Trump real estate organisations and his failed attempt to buy the Buffalo Bills NFL team.
4. A toilet roll-long list of civil actions involving alleged defamation and sundry offences.
Not to mention, and I know this is a piffling, minor matter, charges which could arise from the January 6 attempted insurrection and his phone call to Georgia telling state officials to falsify the election count!!!!
These alleged crimes span years but is Donny Dobad being buggered daily in the showers and living in an 8ft by 6ft room with cardboard furniture and a barred window looking out on the latest prison riot between Bloods and Crips? Is he ballcocks (although I can't, in all honesty, discount the former)!
Merrick, mate, I was once caught with two bald tyres on my aged Cortina and I was in court in less than a month and fined £200, with costs! I shudder to think what would have happened if I had attempted to overthrow the Government and kidnap the Queen!!!! Then again, if my surname was Trump, Bannon, Blair or Bush I would probably have just been given a caution - in 28 years' time.
Are we EVER going to see ANYONE convicted, let alone jailed over this litany of crimes in high office - or am I being a hopeless, teary-eyed romantic?
Your populace all-too-frequently sing about "Land of the free". Maybe you should consider a change of lyric? How about "Land of the free-if-you're-loaded"?
Yours,
Reg.
